ABeka Curriculum

The ABeka Curriculum provides a more traditional approach to teaching Academic skills and Biblical concepts to the children at NorthRidge.

ABeka's proven approach to teaching helps teachers teach and students learn.  it begins with the traditional philosophy of education.  This teacher-directed framework empowers teachers to focus childrens' attention on the material they need to learn--in a context and sequence that will help them learn it best.

Toddlers:

ABeka makes learning numbers fun by giving toddlers large, simple pictures to color while counting objects and recognizing other simple concepts. While learning numbers, shapes, pairs, and opposites, children also develop skills such as counting to ten, hand-eye coordination, coloring, and listening, along with thinking and reasoning.

3-year-olds:

Three-year-olds are already capable of learning so many things! ABeka enhances knowledge of shapes, pairs, opposites, numbers 1–15, sequence of events, senses, seasons, weather, animals, countries, transportation, dot-to-dot, coloring, thinking and reasoning skills, listening skills, and more!

You want your child to enjoy reading. But, before he starts reading, he needs to learn the letters and their sounds. A special animal friend introduces each new letter to help children recognize the letter as well as learn that letter’s sound. Review is accomplished through small projects based on each letter. Activities include tracing practice and using finger paint, glue, and crayons. Your child will look forward to learning his ABCs!

4-year-olds:

Writing is one of the most important skills your child will use throughout his life. ABeka teaches the key foundational blocks for writing, while reinforcing phonics concepts. Children practice correct formations of alphabets, blends, and 1-vowel words, while remembering how to pronounce them. Coloring projects are included for extra fun after the writing lesson has been completed.

Children are introduced to basic phonics and numbers skills while in K4. We use age-appropriate, colorful exercises to help children count to 20 and read one-vowel and two-vowel words. Using blend ladders and coloring exercises, children will learn to recognize letters and the sounds that they make as well as how to count and recognize a specific number of objects.  With coloring, matching, dot-to-dot, and tracing exercises, we give your child a firm understanding of reading and numbers.

We also use short readers that start with basic vowel and consonant sounds and graduate into complete words and sentences. Children learn how to build words by combining consonant and vowel sounds. These readers use one-vowel words, colorful pictures, and review exercises to engage your child as he learns to read!

Kindergarten:

Using colorful phonics worksheets to assist in reading and recognizing letters and their sounds, children participate in age-appropriate phonics exercises to help children associate pictures and words, enhance vocabulary, develop reasoning and listening skills, and follow directions. Children apply their understanding of one- and two-vowel words, special phonics sounds, and blends to create words, finish sentences, solve puzzles, and color pictures.

As children are introduced to various phonics concepts, they will have the opportunity to learn how to write them. Writing tablets with special marks (red dots) will help children remember where to start writing and the houses as a guide for correct placement of the letters.  Extra practice is included to ensure that your child fully grasps the concepts of manuscript writing. We begin with simple letters and blend combinations, but by the end of the year, children will be ready to start writing full sentences!

We aid your child’s curiosity in numbers while building a strong arithmetic foundation at his early age. Children learn numbers concepts from 1-100 and practical skills including telling time, bill and coins value, using the calendar, and much more.  Written and oral evaluations are also provided to measure how well children grasp these important concepts.

Kindergartners are curious learners. ABeka develops their love for science while teaching about God’s world. Children are introduced to concepts such as health, seeds, animals, the seashore, weather, and seasons. Meanwhile we learn that God has given His entire world a specific purpose.

From tracing tulips beneath a windmill in Holland to coloring Tony’s gondola in Venice, ABeka introduces children to simple geography concepts and the beginnings of American history.  Children enjoy learning interesting facts from different countries, meeting children around the world, and understanding the roles of different community helpers.

Bible:

We love learning about Jesus! With all the wonderful stories children learn in the Bible, ABeka provides children hands-on activities to help remember and reinforce what they have learned. By spending quality time with your child during the Bible lesson and providing fun activities afterward, children look forward to learning about Jesus every day!
